fact sheets - Plants Which Use Minimum Water
INTRODUCTION

Soil, wind and sunlight conditions can make a difference on how successful your garden will be when growing these plants. The addition of composts or soil improvers and fertilizers will certainly improve your chanced of having healthy growing plants.
Strong, salt-laden winds play a big part in affecting the growth of the plants.

MULCH
Make sure that a heavy cover of mulch is spread over the top soil to help retain the moisture and keep the roots cool. This will help to cut down on the amount of moisture lost by the wind sweeping across the top soil. Don't forget to add a wetting agent to the soil before the mulch is set down.
(click here for information on mulches )

SOIL WETTING AGENTS
These agents, when applied to the soil are long lasting and help the water to penetrate deeply and evenly increasing the moisture retention in the root zone, saving water by reducing the run off.

We have listed below a selection of plants that you might like to try.

NATIVE SPECIES - N --- or --- NON NATIVE SPECIES - NN

STRAP LEAF PLANTS

Under the classification of 'Strap Leaf' we group all plants which possess 'grass like foliage'. These plants are monocots (one cotyledon or seed leaf) as opposed to broad leafed plants (dicots). Common examples of these are Agapanthus, Phormiums (Flax), all grasses(ornamental and turf) and Dietes (Native Iris). These plants add foliage contrast and texture, and especially in confined areas can deceive the viewer in believing there is more space. They add movement and are excellent in architectural, minimalist and low maintenance designs.
