HOW TO SELECT AND PLANT A HANGING BASKET
HANGING BASKETS
Hanging baskets can be a creative way to utilise restricted or waste space where you can parade your plants, inside or outside. Ferns, trailing Fuchsias, ground covers and other hanging plants or similar can appear sensational when the foliage cascades over the edge of the hanging basket. Seedlings can be planted by cutting holes through the side of the wire basket's liner, creating a ball of foliage and flowers when the plant reaches maturity.
Baskets which are heavily exposed to the weather can heat up and dry out at a fast rate. They must be kept away from windy positions to prevent rapid drying of the soil as this will cause extreme damage to the plant's root system. The result will be either a dead plant or a plant that has poor foliage and flowers.
DECORATIVE WIRE BASKETS
There is a great range to choose from, such as:-
Grecian Ring Scroll baskets, Beehive Baskets, traditional baskets or Flower Baskets.
The baskets are powder coated in heritage green to make them both attractive and for long term rust prevention.
If you like the Wrought Iron look, you can obtain them also with the Antique Ring Scroll which features a classic black textured finish.
BASKET LINERS
Cocoa-Cocoa Fibre Basket liners are available in a traditional flat liner.
Cocoa-Cocoa Fibre liners are available with fully moulded liners which are treated with latex to ensure they keep their original shape for longer, and designed to fit perfectly to create a superior basket.
Sphagnum Moss
A great decorative idea employed by gardening experts for decades is to line the hanging basket with Sphagnum Moss. Ensure the moss is wet before using. Line halfway up the inside of the basket with the moss and then place the potting mix filling to within half an inch of the top. Continue walling up the sides with more moss, then insert the plant, surrounding it with soil. Once again place the Sphagnum Moss on top. This creates an extremely moisture retentive environment for the plant which is also highly decorative.
PLANTING IN A HANGING BASKET
When you plant a hanging basket, be sure that the top of the plant's root ball is just below the level of the basket's rim. When you are multi planting, place the first plant in the centre of the basket, then carefully fill in all the spaces around with other plants. Gently fill the gaps with first grade potting mix and lightly tamp down. It will pay to add a wetting agent (WETA-POT & BASKET) to help moisture retention in soils.
