CUT FLOWERS

HOW TO MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER

Keeping flowers after they have been cut has always been a problem. They are expensive and most often a treasured gift from a loved one. Here are a few tips to add extra life to nature's beauty.

  • Never pick flowers during the heat of the day. Pick them early in the morning or in the cool of the evening when the plants are full of sap.

  • Have a bucket of cool water alongside you and place the flowers into the water as you cut each one.

  • Always use clean vases and fresh water.

  • Never use metallic vases and containers.

  • Take away all the foliage that is going to lay under the water level as it does not take long to pollute the water with rotting material.

  • Do not use cold water in the container, always use tepid water to prevent shock to the system
  • When re-arranging the flowers, re-cut the stems on a slight slant using a sharp knife or secateurs.

  • Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight, draughts and heat.

  • Never place your arrangements near ripe fruit. Fruit give off a natural gas called ethylene that hastens the ripening process of plants.

  • The most important tip of all is to add FLORALIFE to the water. FLORALIFE combines a nutrient to maintain cut flower freshness and a bactericide to prevent infection of the flower. It also contains an acidifier that will correct the pH balance in the water, which adds translocation of water and nutrients into the flower stems. Floralife has a pleasant smell and is available in an easy liquid measure form.
