INTRODUCTION
The best time for major landscape planting is in late autumn, winter and early spring. This method will give the plants root system time to establish before the top soil begins to dry out during the warmer months. HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
PLANTS:- With the aid of a drip system or porous hose under the mulch, water infrequently, allowing deep moisture penetration direct to the plants root zone.
LAWNS:- are best kept grown at a longer height as soon as the weather becomes warmer. Give the lawn areas longer watering time, but water less often. This will encourage the turf roots to penetrate deeper into the soil below. The grass will then become sturdier to the hot harsh climate.
IMPROVING SOIL MOISTURE RETENTION:- Soil structures can be improved to hold more moisture by adding composts into the ground such as Copra Plus Garden Compost. Keeping the soil rich in organic compost will encourage earth worms to aerate the ground, creating tunnels to help with deep water penetration.
MULCHING:- Keep the ground covered with a deep mulch all the year round.
(click here for information on mulches) Mulching also helps control weeds which drain moisture out of the soil.
PAVERS:- Patio areas and garden paths, use porous pavers so that the water will soak through to the ground below.
Instead of hosing down outside paths, patio areas and driveways, utilise a broom, brush or rake to sweep as an alternative.
RECYCLE THE HOME LAUNDRY AND KITCHEN WATER:- When washing small amounts of dishes, place a bowl in the kitchen sink. The water bowl can be lifted out and then pour the contents onto pot plants. If you cannot connect the wash trough to an outside hose in the garden, place a large bucket into the trough. Connect the washing machine outlet hose to hang over the edge of the bucket. You might like to use two bucket, so that one can go on filling while you empty the other one.
Only use safe biodegradable detergents.
The water can then be used for pouring onto pot plants, garden beds and lawn areas.Check with local authorities (ie. council, water authority, EPA) before reusing your greywater.
When cleaning your fish tank:-use the nitrogen and phosphorous-rich water that is syphoned out to poor onto the outside pot plants as a liquid fertilizer.
WATER RESTICTION FINES CAN BE COSTLY:- Be aware of what water restrictions are in place during the year. If you are not sure what type of water restrictions are in posed, contact your local government water supply department.
